July 30, 1999

Jeff Schachter completed his visit to JET, during which, he configured the TRANSP3 workstation to run as an MDSPlus server and installed the JET data client software. These pieces allow ReviewPlus, running on TRANSP3 to access JET data. Additionally, this will allow DIII-D staff, with proper authority, to run ReviewPlus on any GA node to access JET data. The benefit to this configuration is that the JET client software will only need to be maintained on one platform (TRANSP3) rather than every workstation at GA.

A dispersion relation for the resistive wall mode with inclusion of the effect of feedback through an external resistive wall and plasma response in toroidal geometry has been derived.

A sensitivity study on a moderate squareness high triangurality H-mode discharge shows that the access to the second ideal ballooning stability regime in the plasma edge where the pressure gradient is large is relatively insensitive to the details of the edge current density distribution. This is similar to the results of our previous other studies and provides support for our working ELM model which is based on the interplays among the high n ideal ballooning mode and the lower n kink/ballooning modes.

Long 3-D field reverse configuration (FRC) runs (up to 15 growth times) have been carried out for the first time. Unlike previous (short) simulations, these show tilting both in the kinetic (s ≡ a/ρ ~ 3) and fluid (s ~ 10) cases. These results will form the basis for an FRC paper.

A high-level parallelization package written in FORTRAN 90 is being designed to enable much more straightforward porting of legacy Fortran codes to parallel facilities.

The results from the GATO ideal MHD stability calculation for the wall stabilized discharge # 92544, in which GATO predicted instability with no wall but stability with the DIII-D wall, were confirmed by a careful benchmark with the Keldysh Institute KINX code. The two codes predicted identical marginal wall positions (to better than 1%). A minor disparity in the growth rates with no wall, of about 15% remains, but this may be attributable to small differences in reproducing the equilibrium, or possibly to a difference in normalization.

Ideal MHD stability calculations for the L Mode NCS discharge #98482 at 1140 msec predict marginal stability with the DIII-D wall but instability with no wall. This discharge reached betaN = 2.8 at 1140 msec, before disrupting, which is the highest beta reached by an L Mode NCS discharge. The predicted instability is largely typical of those computed in other L Mode NCS discharges, except that it is somewhat broader, which is consistent with the broader pressure profile achieved in this discharge, and with the predicted wall stabilization.

FORTRAN equivalents to the IDL routines READA and READG have been written to allow FORTRAN analysis codes direct access to EFITs stored in MDSplus. This will allow the migration of many GBs worth of user EFITs into MDSplus thereby saving disk space (7 to 1 compression) without compromising user functionality.

The JET Remote Data Access client software has been installed and tested at DIII-D. Sample JET PPF signals were successfully retrieved, marking the first time that JET data has been directly accessed at DIII-D, and paving the way for future data sharing.

The 3-D code FLAME was successfully ported to the Luna cluster. This required rewriting the specialized message-passing routines in FLAME to use standard MPI for parallel processing. The new parallel code will enable faster throughput of high resolution calculations for FRC equilibria.

Lang Lao completed a two week visit to JT-60U where he successfully collaborated on activating the data link system (DLS) which will now allow DIII-D scientists to display and analyze registered JT-60U discharge data remotely using a dedicated JT-60U DLS workstation. He also collaborated on equilibrium reconstruction and edge/NCS stability calculations and participated in the LH NCS and the ECH neoclassical tearing mode stabilization experiments on JT-60U.

A new operator splitting method was derived for the gyrokinetic time-advance operator in the GYRO code which treats all linear dynamics implicitly. The necessary recoding is underway. This more robust method will eliminate certain numerical instabilities and permit longer time steps to be taken in gyrokinetic simulations.
