Common Themes and Challenges in Stellarators and Tokamaks for Fusion Reactors

Theme & Topics

The workshop theme for this year is “Common Themes and Challenges in Stellarators and Tokamaks for Fusion Reactors.” Prediction avoidance and control of MHD instabilities and their consequences is a crucial challenge for magnetic confinement fusion. The MHD stability and control challenges for stellarators and tokamaks share common physics foundations and will increasingly overlap in practice with higher power stellarators and tokamaks utilizing more and more nonaxisymmetric fields. Common challenges include, but are not limited to, ergodic divertors and edge stochasticity, the impact of multiple island chains on confinement, and the interaction of energetic particles with MHD. In this workshop we will discuss recent advances tackling such challenges in both stellarators and tokamaks, with emphasis on the path forward towards demo fusion reactors.

This theme does not exclude contributed talks from other relevant areas of MHD stability and control.
