Topical Organization of the 2018 ROF Process
Updated 17:30 June 16, 2017 (PDT) by M. Fenstermacher
A memo outlining the Task Forces and High Priority Working Groups for the 2018 run campaign is posted here.
The memo specifying the Leadership of the High Priority Thrusts and Research Topics Groups for the 2018 run campaigns will be coming soon. This memo will include contact information (E-mail and phone) for each of the leaders and deputies.
The draft diagram below represents the areas for submission of proposals for the FY18 experimental campaigns. For the purpose of organizing the discussions during the post-ROF breakout sessions, the ROF proposals will be collected in bins corresponding to the red (Torkil Jensen Award), yellow (High Priority Task Force or Thrust) and blue (Physics Area topics). THIS DIAGRAM WILL BE UPDATED FREQUENTLY AS LEADERS AND DEPUTIES FOR THE DIFFERENT ROF CATEGORIES ARE APPOINTED
Run time guidance for priorities and guideline allocations for program time will be allocated by the DIII-D Director (Dave Hill) in consultation with the Deputy Director and RC Chair (Wayne Solomon), the Experimental Science Director (Richard Buttery), the BPMIC Director (Houyang Guo) and Physics Group Leaders. It should be noted that this is not expected to specify the entire campaign; innovative and imaginative proposals are invited in all areas relevant to magnetic fusion energy. Broader programmatic considerations of possible logical next steps for each group are also detailed in links further below, which provide some context on where each field has got to.
It is anticipated that a final notification of the allocations will be distributed in August 2017, after presentation of the proposed experiment selections by group leaders.
The broader programmatic goals of each group in these area summarized at the below links:
- Dynamics & Control]
- Burning Plasma Physics
- Pedestal and ELM
- Boundary and Plasma Materials Interaction Center
It should be noted that this represents a perspective of "possible logical next steps" in each area, based on review of 2017 progress and long range objectives, rather than a detailed program selection for 2018.
