DIII-D DIAGNOSTIC MINI-WORKSHOP

The meeting will take place at General Atomics in San Diego, July 11-12, 2006.

Room 15-019

All members of the fusion community,in the US and abroad, are invited to participate in a mini-workshop on future diagnostics for DIII-D.

The workshop will be based on a brainstorming session(s) format, in order to foster and bring forward the best ideas for DIII-D. Participants should feel free to propose small and/or large diagnostic developments, even though, no new, large sources of funding are expected at this stage. Discussions should focus on the scientific merit of these ideas and their potential for scientific breakthroughs.

There is presently a confluence of upcoming events which would make this a timely event. First, we just completed the LTOA (Long Torus Opening Activities) during which many diagnostic tasks were completed. Second, we are fast approaching the preparation of the next DIII-D 5-year plan. Third, preparations for ITER, KSTAR, EAST and NCT (amongst many others) diagnostics are well underway with new opportunities for great science. Finally, it is expected that in the US, the next DOE sponsored diagnostic competition will be held early next year.

This workshop will be following immediately after this year's HTPD, PSI and EPS meetings, giving the opportunity to researchers to seek new ideas and ways to address outstanding physics questions.

The format of the workshop will try to accommodate specific ideas from any group, presently working on DIII-D or not, but also to seek ways to address some open physics issues, in the 5 year time frame and beyond. We also anticipate some limited discussions and contributions in new technologies and related areas as well.

The meeting is expected to be held in 15-019 with remote viewing/participation for those that will not be able to travel. Suggestions from the whole US and international communities are sought and welcome.

More details will be sent at a later date, including ways to submitting ideas, the meeting's agenda and logistics.

All are welcome
