5-Year Plans for DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod (2003-2008)
10-12 June 2002 San Diego, California Background The DIII-D National Fusion Program at General Atomics and the Alcator C-Mod National Fusion Program at MIT are two major elements of the U.S. fusion program. In the spring of 2002, both programs will be preparing 5-year research plans for the period 2004-2008. These 5-year plans will be presented in an open, national workshop 10-12 June 2002 for community input and discussion. This workshop will be an important opportunity for the U.S. community to gain a view of what the major elements of the U.S. tokamak program will be pursuing during the period leading toward a burning plasma experiment. The plans presented for Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D will provide useful background for the Snowmass Meeting on Burning Plasmas, which is scheduled for 8-19 July 2002. Proposed Format and Agenda for the Workshop The Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D groups will make coordinated and comprehensive presentations on their 5-year plans, within the framework of the U.S. Integrated Program Planning Activity (IPPA). Other presentations will provide an international context for the planned research. There will be specialist breakout sessions for more in-depth discussions of the plan elements and for community feedback on the plans.
