We plan to hold a workshop on "Control of MHD Stability: Back to the Basics", looking back on progress in MHD stability and forward to burning plasmas and the US rejoining ITER.. The workshop will be held at PPPL November 21-23 following the 2004 APS-DPP Annual Meeting in Savannah, Georgia (November 15-19). This is the 9th in the series and will be organized jointly by Columbia University, General Atomics, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, and the University of Wisconsin. This year the workshop will also be a US/JAPAN workshop with JAERI
and NIFS participating in the planning. Please reserve these dates on your calendar NOVEMBER 21-23, 2004.
Place: Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory
Dates: Sunday, 21 November 2004 (Registration at 11:30 AM)
through Tuesday, 23 November 2004 (Ending at 3:00 PM)
Theme: Presentation of new looks at earlier basic work, recent results, present status and future plans in all concepts
on the use of active control of MHD modes looking both back to where we have come from in stability
and ahead to ITER and other burning plasma devices.
This includes the active control of both internal and external MHD modes using plasma rotation, rotation shear,
radio frequency waves, feedback control, or profile control.
Additional details and a call for papers will be given in June 2004. Format of the workshop will be similar to previous workshops in this series which include invited (30 to 40 minute) and contributed (10 to 20 minute) papers.
Program Committee: Robert La Haye (General Atomics), Gerald Navratil (Columbia University), Michio Okabayashi (PPPL),
T. Ozeki (JAERI), John Sarff (Univ. Wisconsin) and K. Yamazaki (NIFS).
Local Organizer: Michio Okabayashi Program Chair: Rob La Haye
