27th Workshop on MHD Stability Control -- A US-Japan Workshop

Description

Theme & Topics

The theme of the joint US-Japan MHD Workshop this year is "Ensuring device reliability through MHD control."  An important topic will be MHD activity measurement and control of 3D structures for DEMO and pilot plants.  With the JT-60SA commissioning underway, and operation of other large devices on the horizon, MHD measurement and control during long-pulse operations is becoming even more important.

The agenda for the Workshop will include contributed talks and 9 invited talks.  Although the theme should provide some guidance for contributed and invited talks, this does not preclude presentations on other topics related to MHD stability/control.

Key Information

   Thursday-Saturday October 26-28, 2023

   Hyatt Place Boulder/ Pearl Street

   Boulder, CO, USA.

The 27th Workshop on MHD Stability Control will be a hybrid meeting including both remote and in-person participation, though in-person attendance is strongly recommended. The physical meeting will be held at the Hyatt Place Boulder/ Pearl Street in Boulder, CO, which is a short distance from where the American Physical Society (APS) Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) Annual meeting will be held the following week (details here). Thursday and Friday will be full days, while Saturday morning will be a half day.  Remote participation will be available through Zoom, with details provided to registered participants the week prior to the meeting.

Invited speakers

The nine invited speakers are the following:

  • Alexander Bock, Max Planck IPP
  • Masaru Furukawa, Tottori University
  • Rahul Gaur, Princeton University
  • Shizuo Inoue, QST
  • Tomas Markovic, IPP of the Czech Academy of Sciences
  • Karsten McCollam, UW-Madison
  • James Yang, PPPL
  • SeongMoo Yang, PPPL
  • Anna Vu, ITER

Registration

Registration will take place in two steps:
        1) Participation must be registered through this linked Google Form, where you will specify details of participation.  Fill out this form whether or not you will present a talk.  The registration deadline for Step 1 is Thursday September 14, 2023
        2) Payment of the $175 registration fee must be made via a separate process.  Please register via the American Physical Society (APS) website using the following link: MHD Workshop Registration.  The deadline for this payment is October 18, 2023.  You don't need to be an APS member to register for this Workshop.  However, you do need to have a free APS account in order to register.  If you don't have an account, then you can click on the "Don't have an account?" link when you get to the Log In page.

If you have restrictions for when you're available for giving a talk, let the program chair (Jeff Levesque) know so that we can accommodate;  Please send a direct email if this is the case.

In order to help with the workshop organization, please complete the first step of the process (the Google Form) at your earlier convenience if you are sure you'll participate.  If you will present a talk, your title can be changed at a later date after this initial submission, but at least include a tentative title at first.  If you are logged in to a Google account when you submit this form, then you should receive a confirmation email yourself at an address that you provide; if you're not logged in, a confirmation might not be sent based on my test cases.

If you would like to participate and will not present a talk, still use the same two-step process above.  Registered email addresses from Step 1 will be used to communicate Workshop participation details.

Lodging

There is a special conference lodging rate of $140 per night (plus tax) for a room at the Workshop hotel, the Hyatt Place Boulder/ Pearl Street.  Getting this room rate requires using a special link from the hotel that the program chair (Jeff Levesque) can provide upon request.  The conference rate is valid for stays with checking in on/after 10/25 and checking out on/before 10/29.

The deadline for booking a room at the Workshop hotel with the special group rate is October 6, 2023.

Recording

The workshop will not be recorded.  However, with author approval, presentations will be posted to a password-protected archive after the workshop.  A link will appear in the side menu bar of this website.

Special Issue papers

Speakers at the workshop will be invited to submit manuscripts to be published in a Special Issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion.  The deadline for submission will be in January 2024.  Articles will be added to a landing page for the Special Issue on a rolling basis upon acceptance.  If you're interested in submitting a manuscript, please contact the MHD Workshop program chair (Jeff Levesque).
