26th Workshop on MHD Stability Control

Description

Theme & Topics

The workshop theme for this year is “MHD control needs for burning plasma devices.” Given the recent fast-paced pursuits toward realizing economical fusion reactors, with a large variety among various organizations, discussion of MHD stability and control applied across devices is particularly important.  The agenda will include contributed talks, invited talks, and a panel discussion.  Although the theme should provide some guidance for contributed and invited talks, this does not preclude presentations on other topics related to MHD stability/control.

Key Information

   Friday-Saturday October 14-15, 2022

   Spokane, WA, USA.

The 26th Workshop on MHD Stability Control will be a hybrid meeting including both remote and in-person participation, though in-person attendance is strongly recommended. The physical meeting will be held at the Spokane Convention Center. This is the same location that the  American Physical Society (APS) Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) Annual meeting will be held in the following week, and the same travel / lodging is recommended (details here). Remote participation will be available through Zoom, with details provided to registered participants the week prior to the meeting.

Invited speakers

The seven invited speakers are the following:

  • Takahiro Bando, Toyohashi University of Technology
  • Laszlo Bardoczi, General Atomics
  • Chris Hansen, University of Washington
  • SangKyeun Kim, Princeton University/PPPL
  • Ryan Sweeney, PSFC, MIT
  • Yuki Takemura, National Institute for Fusion Science
  • Yumou Wei, Columbia University

COVID-19 considerations

For in-person participants, this Workshop will uphold vaccination and masking protocols consistent with those of the larger APS DPP meeting that will follow at the same location.  Up-to-date COVID-19 guidelines from the APS DPP are available at the following web page: https://www.aps.org/meetings/policies/covid.cfmPlease review these guidelines prior to attending the meeting.  The guidelines include strong recommendations, but compliance with the recommendations will not be verified for individuals in attendance.

Note that one of the listed strongly-recommended best practices for attendance is "being vaccinated and having had all available boosters."

Another signficant strongly-recommended best practices for attendance is "taking an at-home antigen test no more than 24 hours prior to arriving at a meeting or a PCR test no more than 72 hours prior to arriving at the meeting."  This Workshop is considered to be an extension of the main DPP meeting, thus the timeline for strongly-recommended testing pertains to the time of arriving at this meeting before the DPP meeting, rather than the APS DPP meeting itself.

While masks are not required, they are still strongly recommended.  The above linked site also states that APS "will be tracking local infection rates. APS reserves the right to mandate masking when the CDC transmission rate is 'high' in the county where a meeting is being held."

Registration

Registration will take place in two steps:
        1) Participation must be registered through this linked Google Form, where you will specify details of participation.  Use this whether or not you will present a talk.  The deadline for this part of registration is Tuesday September 6th.
        2) Payment must be made via the APS DPP meeting website with a deadline of Monday September 12th for those who are attending the APS-DPP conference.  For those who are not participating in the DPP conference, the PDF registration form must be used.

For payment, MHD Workshop registration will appear as an add-on to the regular DPP conference registration, which makes the financial process more streamlined for conference arrangements.  Please be mindful of this when registering for the DPP conference.  The cost of registration is $110 (USD).  If you will need to use the alternative PDF form (linked above) for registration, such as if you will not register for the APS DPP meeting, or if you already registered for the DPP meeting and did not include the MHD Workshop add-on, then please contact the workshop organizing committee.

In order to help with the workshop organization, please complete the first step of the process (the Google Form) at your earlier convenience if you are sure you'll participate.  If you will present a talk, your title can be changed at a later date after this initial submission, but at least include a tentative title at first.  The registration deadline for step 1 is Tuesday September 6, 2022.  Note that the early registration deadline for the APS DPP conference has been shifted later by about a week to be September 12.

Recording

The workshop will not be recorded.  However, with author approval, presentations have been posted to a password-protected archive after the workshop.  A link appears in side menu bar of this website.

Special Issue papers

Speakers at the workshop are invited to submit manuscripts to be published in a Special Issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion.  A landing page for this Special Issue is at: https://iopscience.iop.org/collections/0741-3335_MHD-Stability-Control .  The deadline for submission is January 31, 2023.  Articles appearing on this page will be added on a rolling basis upon acceptance.  If you're interested in submitting a manuscript, please contact the MHD Workshop program chair (Jeff Levesque).
