Subject: DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAMMING GROUP

I am pleased to announce the formation of a Data Analysis Programming Group with David Schissel as the : Coordinator. As a user and a developer of data analysis software, Dave brings with him valuable knowledge of the problems and enthusiasm for solving them. Joining this group full time will be Jeff Schachter, Qian Peng, Ted Terpstra (PPPL), and a new programmer to rebuild our database. Joe Freeman and Chuck Greenfield will participate on a part time basis. Additional programming resources (approximately four FTE) are expected from PPPL and LLNL. This will make a very strong group, commensurate with the importance of the task.

This new group is charged with improving the DIII-D data analysis capabilities with resources applied to address the outstanding issues in a prioritized manner. A plan with milestones will be established to show measurable improvements in six months and a fully operating, improved system in two years. To meet this target will require working closely with the DIIID users and the Computer Systems Group headed by Bill McHarg. I ask you to please help this effort succeed.

The Data Analysis Coordinator will report to a steering committee headed by Vincent Chan and consisting of representatives from the four DIII-D operating divisions. A regular forum will be established to disseminate progress to users and to solicit input. Progress will be reported monthly and at each DOE Quarterly Review.
