The DIII–D advanced tokamak research program played an important role in providing key data to help in the engineering design of ITER. ITER is four times larger than DIII–D and incorporates many DIII–D features. DIII–D currently is exploring a wide range of scientific issues which will assist in optimizing ITER operation.
