ReNeW Themes I and II Joint Workshop

March 23-27, 2009
General Atomics, San Diego

This workshop is over. You can still see all of the presentations, linked from the agenda.

Dear ReNeW Workshop participants,

We have posted a tentative agenda for next week's workshop at http://fusion.gat.com/global/Renewt12_agenda. We believe we have accommodated all requests to speak during the first two days of the meeting (Monday and Tuesday plenary sessions). Please let Chuck know immediately (greenfield@fusion.gat.com) if you feel your submission was omitted in error.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

We ask that speakers leave 10 minutes at the end of their slot for discussion. The time slots are 20 minutes (10+10) for most of the talks. A few, summarizing input on a broader range of potential research thrusts, have been assigned 35 minute slots (25+10). We also ask the the talks be sent to Chuck in advance for posting on the website, and for placement on the presentation computer in advance of the session.

It is imperative that the presenters sharply focus their presentations on the main objective of this workshop-namely, the vetting, discussion, and selection of potential research thrusts (or elements of a thrust) for the respective Themes. To achieve this, a three-part presentation is suggested:

  1. Identification of critical issues that your research thrust would address
  2. Specification of physics requirements for answering key questions regarding these issues
  3. Description of proposed research thrust(s), including scope and timeline

Each presentation should aim to convey the need for a particular research thrust at a high level, with details left to the accompanying White Paper. Detailed discussions of past or present research should not be included in the presentations.

Note that since these talks will be posted on a public website for the use of the entire Fusion Energy Sciences community, it is important that you do not include any proprietary or patentable material on your slides. It will also be made clear on the website that the documents posted there are working documents and should not be referenced or copied without the author's permission.

LOGISTICS

For those of you visiting GA for the meeting, visitor badges will be waiting for you in front of the Visitor Reception Center at 3550 General Atomics Ct. The plenary sessions will all be in room 07-217, next door to the GA cafeteria. All of the breakout sessions will be on the GA main site, within easy walking distance. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early on Monday, since it will take a few minutes to get your badge and find the meeting room.

The agenda for the plenary sessions on Monday and Tuesday is very full, so we will need to be merciless in our attempts to start on time and stay on schedule.

All plenary sessions and 7 9 of the 10 Wednesday breakout sessions will have H.323 videoconferencing available. With the cooperation of the authors, we will attempt to place all of the talks on the web in advance. We will also be using MEETINGPLACE to share the slides from the plenary sessions. Instructions for remote participation will be posted on the website.

Looking forward to seeing you next week,
Jim Van Dam, Mickey Wade, Amanda Hubbard, and Chuck Greenfield

The main purpose of the four ReNeW theme workshops is to provide an opportunity for public input into the ReNeW process. This particular workshop will have a combined focus on Themes I and II.

  • Presentation guidelines
  • Remote participation via video will be available for (at least) the plenary sessions (we are asking even those who will participate remotely to register so we can properly prepare)
  • Access to the General Atomics site requires a security badge - if you will be visiting GA for this meeting, please click here
  • Pre-registration will be requested of all participants, whether you are planning to make a presentation or not
    • This includes participants who are already on the GA site
    • We expect a high degree of participation, and having a head count in advance will help us be prepared
  • The registration and hotel deadlines have passed.
    • We will try to continue to accommodate late registrations
    • Due to recently intensified rules regarding non-citizen visitors to the GA site, I cannot promise to be able to make arrangements for non-citizens at this late date - but I will try.
    • The hotels may still honor the special rates shown on the accommodations page. We have no control over that.
