Fourth Joint Workshop (W62) on “Implementation
of the ITPA Coordinated Research Recommendations,” to
be held in San Diego, Ca, November 1–2, 2005.
The meeting
will take place at General
Atomics in San
Diego,
California
USA from
Tuesday, November 1, 2005 to Wednesday, November 2,
2005.
This is the Fourth in the series of Workshops on "Implementation
of the ITPA Coordinated Research Recommendations". These
workshops are being held in accordance with the decision at the
IEA Large Tokamak Executive Committee meeting of May/June 2002
(see the LT web site http://www-jt60.naka.jaeri.go.jp/lt/ ),
at which the leaders of the Large Tokamak Programs expressed their
wish to stimulate and facilitate increased multi-machine joint
experiments for the various tokamak programs with the recognition
that the ITPA is the most effective international body in place
for generating coordinated experiment plans across a wide range
of fusion research topics. The First of these workshops was held
on 18–19 November 2002 at MIT, Boston, USA; The Second Workshop,
was held on 23 November 2003 at JAERI Naka, Ibaraki, Japan; and
the Third Workshop was held on 8–10 December, 2004 at Eynsham
Hall, Near Oxford, UK. The interest and participation has
increased with each workshop. The discussions and implementation
of joint experiments have enhanced progress on tokamak burning
plasma physics issues, thereby contributing to the success of future
burning plasma experiments such as ITER. The coordinated
efforts resulting from these Workshops have added great value to
the experiments on the individual facilities, and have resulted
in personnel and some hardware exchanges. Exchanges have been carried
out under international agreements, such as those related to the
IEA, namely the Large Tokamak, Poloidal Divertor and TEXTOR Implementing
Agreements (IA's), which include four ITER Parties (Eropean Union,
Japan, Korea, the US). The other two ITER Parties (China
and the Russian Federation) participate in this activity through
their Bilateral Agreements with the U.S. These IEA and Bilateral
Agreements provide the legal framework for the activity.
