Additional Information for Visitors to San Diego

Time

California is in the Pacific Time Zone of the U.S. The state will be on Daylight Savings Time in July.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited on all public transportation and in all public buildings. Smoking is effectively prohibited in all restaurants and bars. Smoking is permitted on the General Atomics site but only outdoors. If you want to smoke in your hotel room, make sure you ask for a smoking room to avoid the possibility of additional cleaning charges. Throughout the rest of California local ordinances vary widely; check before smoking.

Tipping

A tip of 15% of the bill is expected in restaurants and bars if the service is good, and 20% if the service is exceptional. Tip the taxi driver 5-10% if the ride is clean, comfortable, and smoke-free.

Crime

Use the taxi dispatcher at the airport for a licensed taxi. Crimes against persons are very rare in the area of General Atomics and the designated hotels. Do not leave valuable property unattended or visible in cars; automobile break-ins are the most common crime in the beach areas.

Rental Cars

A major credit card is required to rent a car in the U.S. and you usually must be at least 25 years old. Do not take U.S. rental cars across the border into Mexico. Special arrangements are necessary, including written permission and insurance from a Mexican insurance agency. (U.S. insurance is not recognized in Mexico and you may be detained for taking a rental car there. If you have an accident without insurance there you will be arrested and will not be allowed to leave the country.)

Currency

U.S. dollars are the only accepted currency (with the rare exception of a few large hotels). Credit cards are widely used for most transactions including hotels, restaurants, bars, rental cars, and attractions. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are the most common cards. Ask before assuming others can be used. Travelers Checks in U.S. dollars are also usually accepted.

Hotels

Hotels will expect presentation of a credit card upon checkin and will record the card number for billing upon checkout. If you do not have a credit card, expect to be asked for a substantial cash deposit for the room and for activating the telephone for long distance calls.

Taxes

The state and city tax is 7.75%. The hotel/motel tax is 10.5%.

Emergency Assistance

You can call 911 toll-free from any public telephone to obtain emergency police, fire, or medical assistance.

Liquor Laws

Alcohol is sold throughout California. Legal drinking age is 21.

Weather

San Diego's average high temperature in July is 76°F (26°C) and the average low is 66°F (19°C). Temperatures in the coastal strip, where General Atomics is located, are typically a few degrees cooler than the average San Diego temperature. Check here for current weather.

Directory Assistance

For local telephone numbers, dial 411. For long-distance dial 1 followed by the area code followed by 555.1212. Dial toll-free 800.555.1212.
